What Is The Box Elder Bug?
A run-in with the box elder bug is not something you’d likely forget anytime soon. This is because the bug is so distinctive. It has flat, black wings, but it is the unique red markings that make it stand out the most. It has red markings that give it some kind of ornamental mask look. Truly a fascinating-looking bug that can grow to be about ½ inch. They also get their namesake from the fact that they like to feed on box elder seeds. While they do prefer the box elder, it’s not uncommon to see them engulfing on maples, cherries, and ashes as well.
Who Do People Have Box Elder Bugs?
Believe it or not, box elder bugs are in the home because they are trying to get past the upcoming frost and snow conditions. Given the winter conditions that Norfolk faces, it only makes sense for these critters to venture indoors. They simply couldn’t make it in the winter weather, just like the human. This will be about the time when these critters start to become a major nuisance. As beautiful as they might be, you don’t want hundreds of these bugs aggregating in your walls.
Are Box Elder Bugs Dangerous?
Boxelder bugs are nothing more than a nuisance. This doesn’t mean you want them in the home or on the property, especially not if you are trying to run a business, but at least you don’t have to worry about them biting you, stinging you, or transmitting diseases. They don’t do any of these things, but they will pester the heck out of you.
How Do I Eliminate Box Elder Bugs?
Unfortunately, box elder bugs can be more difficult than most nuisance pests to eliminate. This is because they don’t build nests like a lot of critters. A lot of critters come into the home and build nests. This isn’t the case with the box elder bug, which makes them all that more difficult to deal with. Because they don’t build nests, instead they aggregate, they can virtually just pick up and move at the drop of a hat. This means if you don’t hit them head-on with effective treatments, they’ll just move on to further parts of the property.
Can I Do It Myself?
In Norfolk, there are plenty of people that take on box elder bug infestations on their own. And, these individuals might see some forms of success. However, it is highly unlikely that anyone will be able to eliminate an infestation. This is because this is a process that usually requires chemicals. Unfortunately, the over-the-counter chemicals available to the public just aren’t as effective as the ones the pros utilize. And, it’s because they don’t contain all the pertinent ingredients. The pertinent ingredients needed to successfully kill these bugs are illegal to the general public. Anyone with an EPA license or certification handling these chemicals is doing so illegally. This is just something you’ll want to keep in mind when choosing a pest management professional in the Norfolk area.
